Fellow Vermonters, I am running as a Democratic candidate in the 2010 election to represent Vermont in the U.S. Senate. I am running because I believe our political system has lost much of its sense of fair play, so that life is unnecessarily difficult and less satisfying for most Americans, including Vermonters, than it has to be. We must and can restore fairness and reasonableness to the way we share our wealth, provide health care, use energy and treat the environment, and address developing world poverty. Transformation is also urgently needed because the surest means to provide for the common defense is through an enlightened security, based on a foundation of moral strength from leading by example. Unfortunately, Vermont is not insulated from these problems as stagnation of national and international policy neutralizes our small state’s progress. But the basic tenets of American democracy are strong, so we can address our issues and meaningfully improve the lives of Americans and others. I have no illusions about the enormity of obstacles to transformational change, but promise to devote passion, commitment, and experiential lessons learned. I was inspired long ago by the spirit of our state, its love of community and land, town hall public discourse, and allegiance to timeless principles of equity, reasonableness, and service. I have made a career putting these values to work as a naval officer, physician, researcher, teacher, and as a father. It is with a deep respect for this Vermont spirit, reverence for the values America stands for, optimism in our ability to face challenges effectively and fairly, and dedication to our common duty to work to improve the lives of others, that I feel called to make this run. I was further inspired by and remain in awe of the unrelenting dedication to service I was privileged to witness caring for American casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan. I believe Congress can be transformed into an institution we are proud of and can count on if we could be confident our representatives' exclusive motivation was improving the lives of the American people. With such unity of purpose, especially in the Senate, we could progress in addressing our problems, provide opportunity for pursuit of happiness to all, reaffirm that prosperity and fairness can coexist, and allow us to move on to new dreams and challenges. I invite you to explore our campaign by reading more about its ideas, issues, and solutions, and about my background on the Why I'm Running, Biography, Issues, and other website pages. I hope you find the discussions stimulating and agree the issues we intend to fight for are right for Vermonters. Please communicate using the Email, Blog, or Contact pages. Please help move this campaign's ideas to action by voting for me in the upcoming Democratic primary (Sep 2010) and general election (Nov 2010), whether you are a Democrat, Independent, or Republican. Also, resources and team work are essential ingredients of all good causes, so please support this campaign with a Financial contribution or as a Volunteer. Thank you for taking the time to visit our website and please take care. ![]() |
